work

As threatened, too busy and tired to think of a nice photo today.

if it is raining, take the bus

it is just soooo much faster to cycle! But some days it is too hard to see where you are going in a tropical downpour. $2.80 gets me to work, pretty cheap really.

letting go

Why do people accumulate too much stuff? Well part of it is buying stuff you really like, that was expensive, and that you thought would last forever. I have been cleaning and babying and decorating this furniture with attractive throws for too long! Today I didn't ride, and thunder storms are keeping me from running, so I have had a high energy cleaning day. It is over for this pair, they are getting freecycled.
Sit down Mae, you are in for a shock. I nipped out and got proper dining room chairs after sitting on outdoor furniture for over 15 years. I told you it was only temporary!

Nurturing my inner retro grouch big time!

In an effort to "downsize" I have moved my other lounge set into the space vacated by the leather set, and kept the three seat sofa that matches this in the TV room, with the one surviving leather chair that is still in good nick.

Sorry to the many people who visit the blog but not the actual house, must be a bit boring for you. I have been thinking about change and a smaller house, but a fresh take on the lovely old girl and I am over it totally. Now to get stuck into making that really nice downstairs bedroom into a bike shed...

parmigiana

Thanks Sandra for the link to the recipe. We made a focaccia to go with. I expect it will be devine, just waiting for dinner to cool a bit.

*update* It was a fantastic meal, highly recommended. I think without the cheese as a vegan option it would be just as good, the flavour was in the sauce (which I simmered much longer because I love a rich tomato flavour) and the eggplant slices grilled on the BBQ. I really enjoyed this, I always thought anything "parmigiana" involved frying and fat, but this didn't.

eggplant

mmmm... eggplant
I'll be cooking something nice this weekend

apologies for the interruption to the program, I should have taken some photos of the mess on my desk I guess, would have been better than nothing.

bird protection

Getting swooped by Magpies and Larks can be a real issue for some people, so much so that they are driven to create modifications to keep swoopers at bay. This mod is better than most:
With apologies for not taking my phone out of the waterproof pouch in my hurry to get a shot.

Jungle outside my door

I am sitting in my usual computing spot, and this is what I see. The fan is keeping things pleasant, and the smell of a mozzie coil (incense you burn to keep insects at bay) is sweet. Summer time, Saturday, sweet living.

bugs are beautiful!

the runner

This very unflattering self portrait is to commemorate the day the voice in my head told me that I am now a runner. Don't worry, I was listening to the podcast for day 3 of week six of the couch to 5K running program. I do feel kind of like a runner...

market day again

I have been flat out, and the daily pic, while nice, went into the urgent but not important pile. You just have to do what you can.
I had one volunteer to help me with O-week marketing day. If I win a million dollars I am giving a bit chunk of it to him, I would have died today on my own

The smartest students were laying in wait to snag a bike before I even got set up. I was supposed to be in front of the shed but it was sunny and about a million degrees, so I moved to the shade. I sold a fair few helmets.

People schmoozed through the shed and signed up for lockers and shed access. They couldn't believe this is free. I even gave away locks for the lockers. This was an early shot. It was pandemonium all day.

Happy, grateful overseas students who think that JCU absolutely rocks, which of course it does.

I gave away about 120 water bottles, which all needed a JCU BUG sticker put on first, and all the pens (??100s) and many many maps with suggested routes to the uni from your street etc.etc. I have about 30 students who want to join the shed, do up an old bike and ride it away on the promise they will return it to me. I trust they all will too, because they were all really sweet.

Now if I could just get about 15 experienced bike mechanics together by Saturday... hmmmm

Well I need some dinner (no lunch break for me today!) and a nice lie down.

RiverWay

Mom running, Dad skateboarding with a passenger. We all love our RiverWay paths.

new bike racks

These racks, made of recycled plastic and metal, appeared outside my office building today. Did we need them? Well the concrete is still wet and we have a customer!

New helmet cam. Someday I will learn to use my camera without frowning in concentration. Now I just have to figure out how to edit the video, or even how to get it to record when I want, and not just 'sometimes'.

working bee

Time on this planet is our great gift, and giving our time to do good things is the very best way to enjoy it. And always feed your volunteers. Man do we need an army of workers to get these bikes going! What doesn't get done up by Wednesday, I'm letting students pick one and do it up themselves (with help) and it is theirs to keep  for free. I think we'll have fun with that. With Thanks to Scott for the photo with me in it, nice leg!!

surprise!

We had a JCU BUG meeting today at the shed, and when I arrived there was a surprise! A fancy new sign put up by the lovely people in facilities management. I was shocked, it is so big! Thanks heaps.

at work

I had to step out to get a photo of my building for an annual report and while it looks nice out there is is 33 C - that is over 90 F. A cyclone moving away from us has hoovered up all the clouds.

pottering in the shed

I think I know why men like sheds. It is soothing to be in a place with a purpose. I just swept, cleaned and tidied, but I enjoyed it. My Community Bike Shed, I am so tickled to have pulled this off.
... and because it is Sunday, got to have some blooms in the house
doesn't take a big arrangement to make me happy, although big can be pretty cool.

garden glimpses

Cooktown orchids, they look like they are barely surviving your neglect, then they bloom

and this just in, news from our woeful rag The Townsville Bulletin about how much Mundingburrians (that would be us) love our neighbourhood. Good fun for all you come from aways http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2012/02/04/303331_news.html

between storms

Most days I get a fine commute because the rain ends about daybreak, starts up again about the time you are thinking about lunch (10 or 11 in my case ), and clears up again about when it is time to roll home. Yesterday didn't quite work out that way. This morning was better than most.

Persian carpet

I was too tired to take an interesting photo today. I rode in the rain and wind, I worked cartographic miracles all day (and wrote aggro BUG emails to my senior management, *sigh* I used to be such a nice person). I rode home, changed shoes and ran in my cycling kit (hey, it was already sweaty) and took a picture of my lovely Persian carpet plant when I came through the gate. Then my boring shot got interesting, because I started googling to find the botanic name, and I have failed. It is a herbaceous perennial, loves a hard prune once a year, goes leggy when it blooms ( so I cut it back then) but I haven't found it. So there you go, I just took this lovely for granted and now I have to do some homework.

winner!

Ok it isn't a photo, but this is my blog after all, I set the rules. Today I finished my first ever Endomondo challenge, and here is a rare sight, me in first place amongst the women, 86 overall out of 11757 participants. It is silly I know, but being in a challenge does help me get going early and ensures I get a good ride in every day. Winners are grinners!
